Houston Grand Opera Comes to CCC on April 24, 2007, 6:30pm ¡V 8:30pm

One of the most beloved opera¡¦s, Verdi¡¦s Aida, is being presented by the Houston Grand Opera during the month of April.

However, in celebration of Houston International Festival opening in April, which salutes China this year, the Houston Grand Opera and the Chinese Community Center have partnered together to offer opera lovers the opportunity to attend a reception with members from the cast of Verdi¡¦s Aida.

¡§Guang Yang, Chen-Ye Yuan, and Dongwon Shin, all members of the Aida cast, are expected to attend the reception, April 24, at the Chinese Community Center,¡¨ said Nine-Min Cheng, Programs Director, Chinese Community Center.

The evening will begin at 6:30 with a reception and the program will begin at 7:30.

¡§The program will consist of duets and folk songs preformed by the members of the Aida cast,¡¨ Cheng said.

All of the cast members are beloved around the world. For example Chen-Ye has won many awards and has an impressive resume.

¡§Some of Chen-Ye¡¦s recent engagements have included the title role in Verdi¡¦s Rigoletto with Welsh National Opera, which played around the country. Chen-Ye also performed in Puccini¡¦s La boheme with Pittsburgh Opera, the Dragon King in the world premiere of Ning-chi Chen¡¦s Legend of Yao Ji and Valentin in Grounod¡¦s Faust with Opera Hong Kong and Chou En-Lai in John Adam¡¦s Nixon in China with Opera Theatre of St. Louis,¡¨ said Cheng.

Guang Yang and Dongwon Shin also have impressive credits, such as Princess Eboli in Verdi¡¦s Don Carlos and Rosina in Rossini¡¦s The Barber of Seville with Welsh National Opera, Suzuki in Puccini¡¦s Madama Butterfly with Lyric Opera of Chicago and with Dallas Opera and so many other recent engagement.

Dongwon Shin¡¦s recent engagements also are lengthy and impressive, such as Calaf in Puccini¡¦s Turandot with Santa Fe Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre and Opera Australia, Radames in Verdi¡¦s Aida with Opera Company of Philadelphia, Enzo in Ponchielli¡¦s La gioconda with Opera Oerchestra of New York, Canio in Leoncavalli¡¦s Pagliacci with Opera Delaware and so many more.

¡§We are honored to have these highly talented, world-renown opera performers visit the Chinese Community Center, and we hope the public will join us as we welcome them to Houston,¡¨ said Cheng.
