 The
Chinese Community Center was established in 1979 as a
Chinese language school to assist new immigrants
arriving in America. However, as the City grew, so did
the Center and today we provide services and programs
for over 7,000 multi-cultural families each year through
educational, cultural and social service programs.
The largest Asian-led social service agency in Texas,
the Center received its first public funding in 1989 and
became a United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast agency in
1991. The Center is a recognized leader in welcoming
newcomers to America and providing services and programs
to allow those struggling with educational and
employment issues to become contributing members of the
Houston Community.
Founded by Dr. Yhi-Min Ho, Mr. Joseph Lee, and Mr.
Char-An Chao, the Center greatly enhances the lives of
direct beneficiaries ranging from eighteen months of age
to revered elders over the age of ninety.
People of Chinese-American descent have traditionally
been known for their hard-working ethics, strong family
heritage, as well as their tenacity to withstand the
challenges of adapting positively to life in America.
Just as the contemporary “American” family has become a
blend of cultures, faiths, educational levels, as well
as occupational pursuits, the delivery of services to
the Center’s families also recognizes the rich, cultural
heritage of everyone in our community.
The Center promotes cultural understanding and serves as
a resource for Asian-Americans and the community
at-large. Through enhancing the quality of life for all
Houstonians, we have gradually become a community
center, a home, for everyone.
