Our Mission

The mission of  the CCC Family Literacy program is to enable families to become self-sufficient through educational programs designed to have parents and children learning and working together.

Family Chinese Class

We offer the opportunity for families to participate in our family Chinese language program on the weekends.  This class introduces each student to the basic language of Mandarin Chinese. We teach Chinese nursery rhymes, songs and age-appropriate games and activities to enhance the children・s learning experience. This class is most beneficial to non-Mandarin speaking families with Chinese children.

Chinese Story Time at the Walter Branch Public library

In order to encourage the Chinese descendents to carry on the Chinese culture, heritage and language, we coordinated a weekly Chinese story time for the Houston Public Library - Walter Branch (7760 Clarewood, Houston, Texas).  Senior volunteer storytellers from Chinese Community Center read Chinese stories to the children and their parents at Walter Library. The story time is from 4pm to 5pm each Thursday afternoon. In addition to the story time, we teach the participants Chinese language.

Story Time

In-House Childcare Reading Club

  • Children from our Child Development program come to the Family Literacy library in small groups for a 30-minute story time and then do related reading activities such as arts & crafts, games, puzzles, etc.  This activity is especially designed for the CCC Pre-school-age reading club.
  • Children learn library rules and establish good reading habits
  • Children develop their basic reading and listening skills
  • Children learn language and verbal skills through singing songs, role playing, telling stories using their own words and imagination
Reading Time

Family Literacy Library Reading Club

Our Family Literacy Library has over 2500 English children's books donated by the Houston Read Commission, Half Price Books store, Barns and Noble, US Wildflowers Inc and other individual donors.  We also have 175 audio tapes recorded by Conoco-Phillips volunteers.  CCC After School students, Child Development students and their families are encouraged to participate in the Reading Club.  The participants can check out as many books as they wish.  The parents are encouraged to read with their younger children every day.  When the students finish ten books, we award them with a free book!
