On Saturday, February 13, 2010, the
Chinese Community Center will present its Lunar New Year
Festival, an annual celebration featuring food, fun, and
festivities for the entire community. This yearˇ¦s festival
celebrates the Year of the Tiger, an animal associated with
good fortune, power, and royalty, and viewed with both fear
and respect. Attracting over 10,000 visitors each year, the
2010 festival will also celebrate Houstonˇ¦s diversity,
showcasing multicultural performances from Southeast Asian
and South Asian countries.
The event will kick off at 11:00 a.m. with an Opening
Ceremony featuring City of Houstonˇ¦s Mayor Annise Parker,
and other officials and dignitaries. The ceremony will also
feature the Houston Grand Opera, an Acrobatic Magic Show,
and the best of local talent.
Special exhibitions will showcase cultural traditions,
including origami and a Chinese calligraphy demonstration.
There will also be a raffle ($3 per ticket) that includes
grand prizes such as round-trip airline tickets. A variety
of Asian food specialties and arts & crafts, including
commemorative Year of the Tiger t-shirts, will also be
available for purchase. More festivities for the family
included in the 60-booth bazaar.
